About This Project

The Tiger Trail is a new habitat for Knowsley Safari Park's two Amur Tigers, sisters Bira and Sinda, and a fun visitor experience for their guests. Horticon were engaged as the Principal Contractor to construct the enclosure, which is over 10,000m2, and the adjoining visitor area.

The enclosure was built specifically for the Amur tigers to provide an enriched natural habitat. The design utilised the existing natural flowing stream and ponds to create an environment similar to their home in the Amur forest. The adjacent “Tiger Trail” allows visitors to immerse themselves in the Russian themed habitat and learn all about the Amur tiger; their habitat, threats to their survival and conservation.

This was a design and build contract. The contractor design elements included the 6m high fencing, the viewing structures, glazed screens, the tiger pens and the bridges. We worked closely with specialist subcontractors to complete these design works and also for the installation of the electrical services.

Our works also included excavation and earth movement to redefine land contours, installation of drainage, formation of footpaths, boardwalks and decking, installation of fencing and gates with integrated fixture and fittings, construction of stone escarpment, buildings, bridges and soft landscaping.

Horticon Ltd are delighted to have won two BALI National Landscape Awards for the Tiger Trail at Knowsley Safari Park. The scheme was successful in both the “Hard Landscaping Construction (cost over £1.5 million)” and “Regeneration Scheme (over £500k)” categories.
